The Mikhailovsky theatre presents the ballet that has become the symbol of the Russian art itself. The standard classical choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov has undergone many editions. Principal Guest Ballet Master Mikhail Messerer has chosen the version of Alexander Gorsky and Asaf Messerer of 1956 and carefully restored it. After the tour in London in 2010, The Daily Telegraphcalled it "a clear and sincere staging". It includes the legendary lyric "swan act" with its tense asymmetric cord groups and the famous adagio, and also presents the colorful variety of the national dance patterns in the ball scenes.

The leading part will be performed by Oksana Bondareva and Ekaterina Borchenko in turn. The former has recently made a bright debut in this role at the Mikhailovsky theatre. The latter is already an acknowledged Odette-Odile. The Observer notes that Borchenko is "a fine-drawn, powerful Odette, whose sway-back leg-line gives her dancing a racily exotic finish. As Odile, raking the stage with her dark gaze, she seems to purr with sexual exultancy".

The Mikhailovsky theatre is the famous Russian musical theatre, a true jewel in the crown of the country's cultural capital. It was established by Tsar Nicholas I in 1833 as one of the privileged Imperial theatres and was named after Grand Prince Mikhail, the Emperor's brother. It was originally intended for the Imperial family, court and retinue. Even when it was opened to the general public, it retained its high society atmosphere. Nowadays, the theatre combines classical traditions with a spirit of innovation and bold artistic experiments. Led by the talented creative team, such as choreographers Nacho Duato and ballet master Mikhail Messerer, principal conductor Mikhail Tatarnikov, the Mikhailovsky theatre regularly presents opera and ballet premieres that bring real pleasure to art connoisseurs both in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
