On Jan. 3, the day Mike Killeen and I were to share our first anniversary newscast, I fell ill in the late afternoon and was unable to make the broadcast that evening.

At first I thought it was food poisoning, but upon further investigation, it was determined that it was not the lasagna I'd eaten earlier in the day. Rather, I needed emergency surgery, which went very well. The recovery period, however, means that I will be out of commission until the spring. I'll check in from time to time, but doctor's orders are to take it easy.

Those of you who have been through surgery will know you don't have a whole lot of get-up-and-go anyway, so I'll be watching the news rather than anchoring it for another six to eight weeks.

It's been so sad to watch the tragedy unfold in Burns Lake -- rarely does a story so deeply affect an entire town. My thoughts are with them, and like you, I will watch for updates on CTV News.

Tamara is now home resting comfortably and is expected to return to the anchor desk in March.
