B.C. drivers should be prepared to step on the brakes as 35 new red-light cameras go live across the province.

This is the third phase of red-light camera installations this year as part of the Intersection Safety Camera program, bringing the total to 105.

By the end of the year, ICBC expects to have a dedicated single digital camera at each of 140 sites.

Experts from the RCMP, Police Services, ICBC and engineering and traffic safety specialists came together to select high-risk intersections.

"We've seen too often the carnage of intersection crashes," said RCMP Supt. Norm Gaumont. "These cameras are going to help make our roads safer by targeting those who choose to deliberately put other lives at risk."

The cameras detect and photograph vehicles running a red light and ICBC expects them to reduce crashes causing death or injury by six per cent a year.

But not all of the cameras will be activated at the same time. According to ICBC, in order to be cost-effective, the cameras will be operated strategically – using data to determine when the risk is greatest.

The revenue from the tickets will be distributed among all municipalities across B.C. for policing and community-based public safety programs, said ICBC.
