A scuba diver is dead after becoming tangled in a fish net off the coast of Vancouver Island Sunday night.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Murray said a call came in at around 9 p.m. that a man was caught in Port Alberni's Harbour Quay.

"It was a call from his wife who had witnessed him in the water," Murray said. "He did surface requesting assistance."

By the time emergency responders were able to pull the net to shore, the diver had stopped breathing.

His name has not been released.

Gillnets are allowed at this time of year, and a local commercial diver says the area is not a place for recreational diving because of marine traffic and fishing.
