A West Vancouver bus driver is recovering after police say a man attempted to board without paying and then lashed out at the driver.

A 47-year-old male tried to board the bus Monday around 4 p.m. in the 900-block of Marine Drive and then allegedly became upset when the bus driver denied access, according to police.

Passengers on the bus stepped forward to help when the attacker started punching the bus driver in the face, police Cpl. Jag Johal told ctvbc.ca. The suspect then left the bus.

Officers arrived shortly after and arrested the man. He made a court appearance Tuesday morning.

The driver sustained minor injuries to his face and was treated in hospital.

West Vancouver police are still actively investigating the incident and encourage anyone who witnessed the incident to call 604-925-7300.
