Officers with B.C.'s homicide team are investigating the discovery of a body in a park in Burnaby.

The body was found by a city worker on Monday afternoon near the intersection of Winston Street and Piper Avenue on the outskirts of Burnaby Lake Park. Cpl. Dale Carr said that the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is treating it as a homicide, and a large area has been taped off.

"The primary goal for us is to indentify the individual…to understand who the victim is and who their friends and associates are." Carr told CTV News.

Carr also said the incident does not appear to be related to drugs or gangs, and there are no connections to another body found in a North Vancouver Park last week.

The park will remain sealed off overnight while police continue the investigation.
