A 17-year-old boy was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a dump truck on his way to school in East Vancouver.

Police say the boy was hit when the vehicle was making a right hand turn at the intersection of Nanaimo and Hastings streets. He was killed instantly.

"This is a complete tragedy that has affected everyone involved," Cst. Jana McGuinness said at a press conference. "Even seasoned officers have found this to be a very tragic and unsettling incident."

The boy's family is overseas and has not yet been notified.

Police say the driver is cooperating with police and has been "extremely traumatized" by the incident.
