An elderly woman is in hospital after a train struck her car in an intersection in Qualicum Beach, B.C. around noon on Friday, according to firefighters.
The woman was driving a silver four-door sedan when the VIA Rail Dayliner hit her car and pushed it about 200 feet down the tracks.
Fire Chief Darryl Kohse said the impact occurred at a stop sign controlled intersection on Arbutus Street. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
When firefighters responded to the scene, the woman was trapped in her car.
After stabilizing the vehicle, the train was backed up and emergency crews rescued the woman from her car.
"The car suffered a large impact to the driver's side door," Kohse said.
The woman who was approximately 85 years old was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Kohse.
"She was conscious and talking," he said.
The undamaged train and vehicle remain on the tracks as the investigation continues. No one on the train was injured.
