North Vancouverites living near the Upper Levels Highway are calling for the provincial government to provide better protection for their homes, after a dump truck crash on Monday sent debris flying into backyards.

The commercial truck lost control as it was heading eastbound near the exit for Capilano Road. It slid onto a concrete median and then slammed into a fence separating nearby homes from the road.

"We believe it lost control after one of its front tires blew out, which took it off road," RCMP Insp. George Fellner told ctvbc.ca.

Homeowner Jason Fisher was standing in his backyard, so close to the crash that he was still in shock hours later.

"All of a sudden I hear this great big bang, and it was just like the whole fence shook and all the debris came flying out and it must've missed me by just six feet," he said. "I can't believe that nobody's hurt."

The truck's tires appeared to be completely bald, and the veteran truck tower who removed the vehicle said he's stunned it was allowed on the road.

"There's no excuse for that at all. That's just ignorance," he said. "This guy here's really lucky that nobody's dead."

CTV News visited the address for the trucking company, but no one was there.

No one was injured in the crash, and the RCMP's commercial vehicle inspection team is investigating what caused the accident.

But Fisher says that's not enough, and he's calling for the Ministry of Transportation to put up stronger barriers to protect homes like his.

"We have asked to get a fence put up here and they say ‘Oh, it's fine,' but this is a prime example of what could happen," he said.
