A Vancouver woman has been charged with first degree murder in the slaying of a disabled man more than two years ago.

Marlene Anna Grenier, 31, was arrested on Sunday, and charged a day later in the March 2008 killing of 45-year-old Henrique Manuel Marques.

Relatives discovered Marques's body in his apartment near Nanaimo Street and East 30th Avenue.

Marques was an ICBC RoadSense speaker, who lectured high school students about the dangers of speeding.

He lost the use of his legs in a motorcycle accident about 20 years before his death and was well known in Vancouver's Portuguese community, according to his friends.

At a press conference Monday, Vancouver police Insp. Mike Porteous said that Grenier and Marques were acquaintances, and Grenier was known to police.

Porteous declined to give details of the police investigation or what evidence led to Grenier's arrest.

"I can say that this investigation, which was very complex, very long-term and involved dozens of officers at times and was exhaustive and exhausting," Porteous said.
