These protesters should be demasked before being allowed anywhere near the athletes. Who do they think they are? Besides, what are they trying to prove?

2010 protesters say police must keep the peace

Police are expecting large crowds of protesters to mark the start of the Winter Games later this week, but international Olympic officials say they're not concerned the demonstrations will pose any serious problems.
Anti-Olympic groups are planning a large event in downtown Vancouver to coincide with Friday's opening ceremonies, and others are expected to follow throughout the ensuing 16 days of the Games.
Vancouver police have recently said they expect between 1,000 and 1,500 protesters in the first few days of the Olympics -- a significantly larger number than many had previously expected -- and protest organizers say they hope to exceed those figures.
But officials with the International Olympic Committee and the local organizing committee, known as VANOC, said they were confident protests will be peaceful and won't cause any major disruptions during the Games.
Gerhard Heiberg, a member of the IOC's executive board, said the committee has always been aware of the potential for protests during the Vancouver Olympics.
"I wouldn't call it concerns," Heiberg, who was also the chairman of the committee that evaluated Vancouver's bid for the Games in 2003, said at a news conference Monday.
"We have to accept protests and there will be some and fine, let's leave it. We are used to that."
The IOC raised the issue of protests with VANOC during a final briefing on Monday, but Heiberg said he was curious -- rather than concerned -- about what will happen.
Several protest organizers held their own news conference on Monday, saying they hope everyone from activist groups to union members to disaffected members of the public show up out to denounce the Games.
"I hope thousands of them come out if the press stops scaring people talking about the possibility of violence," said Bob Ages of the Council of Canadians. "I think it could be really big."
Police have insisted they will respect protesters' right to free speech, so long as they don't break the law or interfere with the rights of anyone else.
However, Olympic critics have complained the RCMP-led unit overseeing Olympic security has harassed activists by approaching them on the street and speaking with their neighbours and members of their families.
They also complain that protesters from outside the country have been stopped or questioned at the border, most recently this past weekend when Martin Macias Jr., an American who led a group opposed to Chicago's bid for the 2016 Games, was denied entry into Canada.
"The police have worked really hard to intimidate and discourage people from expressing themselves, so I hope they will be brave come the Olympics and realize we have nothing to fear if we have the numbers," said Alissa Westergard-Thorpe of the Olympic Resistance Movement.
The protest organizers said it will be up to the police, not them, to ensure protests remain peaceful.
For their part, police said they will set up so-called "safe assembly" areas for protests, rather than try to stop them.
The idea of creating areas where protesters could demonstrate safely was a key recommendation in a report into the 1997 APEC protests in Vancouver, when demonstrators were pepper sprayed, detained and strip searched. The event remains a stain on the reputation of the RCMP.
Protesters, however, have vowed not to use any area that police officially designated as a protest zone.
Friday's protest is planned for a lawn outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, a traditional demonstration space that Vancouver police said they plan to leave alone during the Olympics.
Westergard-Thorpe said anti-Olympic protesters don't plan to be violent.
"There's never been any violence associated with an anti-Olympic protest -- property damage that you might see in some cases is not violence," she said.

Why is it loser protestors need to hide their identity? And why is it up to the police to control the stupid acts of childish protestors. They are all just mental idiots. What is there to protest over the olympics? If they step out of line arrest them for causing a public distubrance. If they protest too much give them all soothers and a box of depends. |

Please, all these people, get a job, any job; get an education, any education; and stop waiting for any government level to resolve all your problems and wasting the time and money of people who's really work and pay their taxes.Ah..and stop doing drugs, that's the begining of your problems and the end of them. |
|
I wish the media would stop giving these protesters any news coverage. That is what they want. To get some publicity, get on TV. Their cause is lost on me with their approach. I would cut off any public funding they get. I do not want a cent of my tax money to support them or their cause. If this is how they do "business" then my purse and eyes are shut. If someone came to my door dressed like this guy, I would grab a gun if I had one. Disgusting. I would be ashamed if these were my offspring. Ashamed. |
|
It is so sad to see these guys bring Vancouver image down with their miserable lives. I hope that the police would put them in their place properly. These guys are bunch of losers. |

The bigger the protest the better. There has to be a voice from the people for the people against the corporatization of the olympic games .... I for one don't support the use of taxpayers money to support the multi-million dollar athletes. There ought to be a salary cap on the olympic games! |
|
The Vancouver Olympics are going to be an Albatross around every Taxpayer in BC' s neck. Quebec is still paying for theirs. If the influential and wealthy want to have the Olympics "LET THEM PAY FOR THEM' God only knows the average Joe can't afford to go but pays for them anyway in Taxes. |
|
The Olympics are an elitist sham. They are pro corporate and anti democracy and anti human rights. Since when did the taxpayers elect to purchase millions of dollars in tickets to be given away to the rich (who could buy them anyway) and politicians who support the current government regime. If you are a fan of the Olympics perhaps asking the woman ski jumpers what they think of the Olympics in terms of human rights and equality. Protest away I'll be right there with you! |
|
I have seen other pictures of the protesters and as far as I have seen there is just the one person wearing a mask. I love sports and I do wish the people competing and the best BUT it has cost this province. It seemed the middle to lower income people just didn't matter to this government. All THEY cared about was their own ego (Gordo!!) |

Protest in the form violence or non-violence will not achieve anything these days. Look at the world, tell me a country who has accepted a protesters demands?? Zero. We all have issues and the world has issues. Yes the games cost a lot of money and blah .. blahh.. blah... but look at the goods that came out of it; expanded sea to sky hwy, more community centres, and best of all it has united Canadians in a big way and positive way.Enjoy them game and be Canadian. |

Sayo wrote,"..these guys bring Vancouver image down.."What image would that be? Wouldn't want those tourists to see/experience anything other than those closed down streets, barricades, screening terminals, tents, 2-3 hour lineups before a venue to even get in, up to 2km hikes from their buses to Cypress and Whistler venues... that is, if they can keep the snow. Is this the Vancouver that you know? the one that is ripping people off, left right and centre, with $50 parking for half a day downtown, the hotel rates which have doubled and tripled? with aboriginal knockoffs that are made in China and being pushed on VANOC website as authentic? with mascots that were conceived by a California company and made in China? those made in China red mittens? with opening ceremonies choreographed by an australian? a $10 million Canada pavillion tent that was bought in the US? gouging the media for internet use when it's been free in all past Olympics? Hell, we even have the governor of California running with the torch.. I could have sworn he was not a Canadian... go figure. There is so precious little about these games that are homegrown Vancouver, either in attitude or any kind of physical contribution. They could have called it the China/US Olympics Alliance and we might not have been on the hook for $7 billion. In fact, the only breath of fresh air in these games will be those protesters. |

Some clown with a mask over his face says it's up to police not to be violent.Give me a break.I am a full supporter of free speech, and the right to lawful demonstrations. But my advice to police is simple, keep the peace by locking up every one of these morons who crosses the line. They can have their day in court when the Olympics is over.Either that,of the judge can issue an order for them to remain far away from this event. As to "west bank kid",I am not rich, but I am paying for these Olympics. The real issue here is not about the fact that I'm paying for them, but that these ignorant fools think I should do that AND pay more of my wages to support people who will not work at all.I pay for welfare,I pay for drug injection sites,I pay for EI,I pay for free homes for the homeless,I pay for free health care,I pay for schools I don't use,I pay for transit that doesn't serve me,.I pay,and pay,and pay for ungrateful clowns who just want more, and more, and more for free, free, free. Well,my friend. As much as this is costing this taxpayer, for once in my life I am grateful to see some of my tax dollars spent on something I can enjoy.Believe it or not,not EVERY SINGLE TAX DOLLAR can be spent on social programs. On the day that happens, the rest of us will quit work too.I refuse to feel guilty because some drug addicted wino doesn't have free food and a free home to live in. Get over it. |

Why is it in today's world, especially in North America, the vocal MINORITY seem to have more rights than the majority. Are the Olympics perfect? No. What is? I think these protesters have made their point, the population and the government has heard them, progress has been made on many social issues, is it enough? No, its never enough, but, it certainly is a step in the right direction. I think these protester need a lesson in economics 101. Vancouver won the bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympic games more than 6 1/2 years ago, since then years and years of employment has generated thousands and thousands of jobs, from those jobs comes all the payroll taxes which in turn go to pay for health, education and other social programs. As well, the spin off effect from the thousands and thousands of people working to build the venues, improve the highway, build the RAV line and on and on has the spin off effect of creating more jobs which goes on the generate more government revenues to pay for health, education and other social programs. If I hear this is a two week party for the rich one more time, I am going to hurl. People pick up on these media catch phrases and its like their brainwashed. When I read Alissa Westergard-Thorpe of the Olympic Resistance Movement saying, "There's never been any violence associated with an anti-Olympic protest -- property damage that you might see in some cases is not violence," I am like give me a break, YES, Alissa, property damage is violence, WAKE UP. Any protester caught breaking the law in any way, including destroying public or private property should be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. |
|
These people are using this a tincture for their bad actions. They are saying when THEY act up its the fault of the police, when the protesters get out of line, its the fault of people trying to keep them in line. These people want you to believe that they are not responsible for their own actions and that the police will be the ones inciting them to violence. Well I hope that all reading this understand that when the protesters get out of line that they are the ones who made the conscious decision to be social brats. And when they do I hope the police round them up and send them to jail, deport all the internationals and send a clear message to dissidents that their childish temper tantrums have consequences. |

DEAR TED:Why is it that you have decided to turn your back on the financial disaster? The spending is too much. You must either be from VANOC or a BC Liberal diehard, or just a person who's MOMMY and DADDY are set to make money on this Party. Or could you be from the Public affairs bureau's spin machine,,,,or one of those young liberals. Hitler had the youth organization also. I am a working taxpayer, educated, but not smug. Your attempt to discredit your opponents by calling them whiners, reflects badly on your intelligence. Your task... find me one intelligent person who agrees with this Olympic spending. I have tried to find one, the volunteers I know, are starting to rethink their actions. You, have to be young dumb or old and dumb either way I hope you see it fit to move out of my country. We don't need your type... |
|
CTV is the official sponsor enough said. I wish we could see who these Olympic clowns are so we can avoid these idiots on a daily basis. |
|
Police must keep the peace? You bet they'll keep the peace. They'll keep the peace by locking up any sh*t-disturbers! These protesters are the ones who act out violently and force the police to take action. They're the same ones that then call it a "police state". If they didn't start so much trouble, there wouldn't be a need for the cops' presence, would there? If anything, protesters need to keep the peace. Protest, but do it peacefully! |
|
Most of the protesters are anarchists who show up to every protest they can just looking for an excuse to start vandalizing. It is laughable and pathetic that they are trying to put the police on the defensive about starting trouble. Everyone sees through their silly tactics. |
|
I support Sport. I support Canada.Sadly, The Olympic Movement has been taken over by many issues that reflect poorly on both.To our Athletes --- good luck!To those of you who want support this fiasco ... better enjoy the next three weeks because the Taxpayers of Vancouver, British Columbia & Canada are going to be on the hook for this caprice for many, many years to come.To those with the courage to exercise their democratic right to freedom of speech and protest. Be brave! Be Safe! Take care! Years from now the world will know that you were correct. |
|
As usual, right-wingnuts are out in callous force with their rabid hyperpartisan attacks on democracy. You folks need to lighten up. |

Well Wendy, in today's forum you have been outdone for the most inane and insulting comment. Hard to comprehend, but DON did it. How suggesting that protesters should uncover their faces, as Ted did makes him a Vanoc or Liberal hack or a rich kid whose Mommy and Daddy will make money from this must even be beyond you. Then he compares them to “HITLER” in his own gross and uneducated attempt to discredit his opponents by suggesting they have the same influence the megalomaniacal murderer, Hitler did on the Hitler youth. Disgusting! Sounds like DON is likely one of these masked malcontents, his reasoning matches theirs perfectly. Social disorder not based on either fact or reason. Well Donny, I’m a middle class taxpayer, educated in the school of hard knocks and successful by ambition and hard work and I agree with the spending. The majority of this investment used to build needed infrastructure in our region, which will remain in use by all for decades to come. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Perhaps that’s a difficult concept in your back alley where consequently you have found few who agree with the Olympic legacy. Imagine that! However I have through out the range of my contacts in BC and Canada, not found more than a couple who at worst have doubts about the Olympics. It is therefore my advice to you that if you do not agree with the actions of a democratically elected government to the extent that you support violent protest by thugs and cowards in masks that it you that leave OUR Country; indeed it is us do not need your type! Bon Voyage! . |
|
What a sad state of intelligence these anti Olympic Protesters have. They obviously have no clue that the only reason they have freedom of speech today is from people who protested and voiced their concern. And women, 50 years ago you had no right to vote. Now you are demonizing those who are protesting for rights. Shameful. Disgraceful. Pathetic. |
