This month is shaping up to be one of the warmest on record.
“It's definitely going down as one of the warmer Januarys for sure,” said CTV British Columbia meteorologist Jesse Mason. “And possibly the warmest one on record, at least since record keeping began.”
Usually, Metro Vancouver is at 3 or 4 degrees during the day. Lately, the area has been hitting 7 degrees.
Mother Nature couldn’t have picked a worst time to break records.
2010 Vancouver Olympic organizers have been scrambling to prepare Cypress Mountain in time for the Games.
They’re using bales of straw to build up corners and jumps on the snowboarding and freestyle skiing venues.
Like clockwork, truckloads of straw arrive, are unloaded, and then plucked by helicopter to be dropped on the courses.
Meanwhile, snow from higher elevations are being pushed onto the courses.
It’s not cheap. Each bale of straw costs several hundred dollars. The choppers cost at least $1,000 an hour.
Organizers have said their contingency fund is covering the costs.
As for what Mother Nature will bring during the Games? It’s too early to say, Mason said.
But “things could still change.”
With a report from CTV British Columbia’s Mike Killeen

I love it and I hope it gets warmer and rains even more. I am not a fan of the Olympics and I pray they are an absolute disaster. Waste of money.... Bring on the shorts and T-shirts..... |

What is all this talk of Mother nature? I thought carbon was the reason for the warmer temps? |
|
haha im so glad that the weather is getting warmer ..its awesome and yes im hoping once the Olympics start will start raining ..and yes Sonny i agree with you Olympics are just a waste of money and the tax payer will end up paying for all this |
|
I there are some that hope the Olympics will be a bust but being a tax-payer myself, I hope that they are successful. How else will the province recover from the Olympics - I hope people will support the Olympics and spend a lot of money in the province not only during the Olympics but in years later as well. People also thought the world's fair was a waste of money but - it put Vancouver and BC on the map and I am sure the city and the province were well compensated with increased tourism for years following. |

Strange how people complain that the Olympics are a waste of money but at the same time hope our investment in these games has no positive return. You guys are losers. The Olympics are coming and it is in everyones benefit that they be successful. |

Thanks for your idiotic narrow minded comments! It is amazing that you think a failure of the games will be good for Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada. Please put down your play stations or your computers and step outside your bedroom into the world that the rest of us reside. For your information, there are too many good people that have donated their time and continue to put in an exhaustive effort to let Our Games be a failure. Go Canada! |

damned, they were right about global warming!we like it now but i wonder about the run off, will it be enough to keep us in water over the summer? |
