Search and rescue teams recovered the body Tuesday of B.C.'s first avalanche victim of the year near Rossland.

The Alberta man, in his mid-30s, was one of four skiers who used snowmobiles to get into the backcountry when disaster struck Monday afternoon.

The men were skiing in a treed area when one of them drifted into an open bowl and the snow above him let go. The avalanche risk at the time was rated as "considerable."

Dangerous conditions prevented technicians from recovering the body on Monday.

The incident comes on the heels of a recent anniversary in the tiny B.C. community of Sparwood.

In December 2008, eight men were killed by a series of avalanches as they were snowmobiling.
