Vancouver police are investigating an armed sexual assault that occurred early Saturday morning in the city's West End neighbourhood.

The incident took place at about 3:45 a.m. on the 1300 block of Burnaby Street, near the corner of Jervis. No shots were fired.

The victim, a transgendered resident, was taken to hospital, but police can not confirm the extent of the injuries sustained.

"The investigation is in its early, early stages, and we still have a lot of interviewing to do," Const. Lindsey Houghton told ctvbc.ca.

"The victim, from what I can tell, is recovering," Houghton added.

No suspects have been identified, but more details are expected in the next few days.

Anyone with information on the assault can contact the Vancouver Police Department.
