Victoria Police are seeking the public's help in finding the man suspected to have stabbed a 26-year-old newlywed woman in her home early Wednesday morning.

Officials say the victim woke up at about 4:00 a.m. after hearing noises, and walked downstairs to find an unknown man who had removed his shoes.

The startled suspect then stabbed the woman in the leg, severing her femoral artery, vein and nerve to the lower leg.

The husband managed to grab and restrain the suspect. However, due to his wife's severe injuries, he was forced to release the assailant who then ran out the front door.

On Friday, Victoria Police released a composite sketch of the suspect in hopes that the public will be able to help identify him.

He's described as being between 5'6" and 5'10" tall, in his early 20s with dark skin and a slim build. He had short black hair and was wearing black track pants with stripes and a black hooded jacket.

The victim and her husband are not known to police. The woman is currently in hospital with serious injuries that police describe as "life-altering."

The couple had been married about two weeks before the attack.
