Kelowna RCMP have confirmed the body discovered Tuesday evening is that of 78-year-old Josephine "Babs" Capozzi, of the prominent local Capozzi family.

Capozzi was found dead inside her home at 817 Young Road at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday. A man known to police was arrested at the scene, but RCMP officers could not investigate the home until a search warrant was obtained - at 11:30 a.m. the next morning.

"Obviously people who reside in the property are entitled to a reasonable expectation of privacy," Sgt. Ann Brinnen said Thursday. "We were therefore required by law to obtain a search warrant."

The identity of the suspect, who is still being held in custody, has not been released. RCMP confirmed Thursday that the suspect has appeared before a justice of the peace, but no charges have been filed.

Capozzi's death is being treated as suspicious, but officers are not revealing anything more until an autopsy has been performed.

"I am not in a position to comment on the condition of the body," Brinnen said. "We'll know more when the autopsy is complete, probably early this evening."

Babs Capozzi was the first wife of Tom Capozzi, whose family founded Calona Wines and built the Capri Hotel in Kelowna.
