For the second time in a week, fire has closed Blackcomb Mountain to tourists.

A fire erupted in Ruby Bowl Monday afternoon, about five kilometers uphill from the resort town of Whistler.

Staff and tourists were evacuated from Blackcomb as a precaution. The fire is within the ski area boundaries, but the resort said no structures or Olympic venues are in danger.

Fire officials said the fire had likely been smoldering for days after a lightning strike on Thursday and then flared up on Monday.

On Sunday, mountain operations reopened after an unrelated fire above Crystal Ridge, about a kilometre down the hill.

That fire swelled to about 70 hectares but firefighters have reduced it to about 30 hectares. It is fully contained.
