A man has died after two 20-foot power boats collided near Pender Island, which is located in the Georgia Strait between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

The accident happened in an area called Swanson Channel on Friday evening.

One of the people involved in the crash was able to call the Coast Guard and ask for help.

"We received the call at about 8:00 p.m.,'' said Capt. John Edwards of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.

BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says two vessels were rerouted to help with the rescue, a move that allowed passengers to witness the drama.

The two boats had been travelling together, with one slightly in front of the other, when one driver swerved to avoid a floating log and crashed into the other boat.

Two people suffered minor injuries, but the identity of the man who died hasn't been released.

The RCMP is still conducting an investigation into the incident.
