A major new highway in Metro Vancouver has got a green light.

The provincial government has given environmental approval to the South Fraser Perimeter Road, a planned four-lane highway that will run from south Delta to the Trans-Canada Highway in Surrey.

Federal approvals are still needed for the billion-dollar highway, which is part of the provincial government's Gateway transportation plan to improve road and rail lines in Metro Vancouver.

It will likely face stiff opposition in some areas because it runs near the sensitive Burns Bog wetland in Delta, as well as near residential areas and through farmland.
