Police have identified the man shot dead in a double murder inside a Burnaby sushi restaurant Sunday night, but have yet to release the name of the female victim.

The body of 36-year-old Royal Oak Sushi House owner Huong (Andy) Tran was discovered around 9:30 p.m. after a passerby spotted a person lying on the ground of the restaurant in the 6500-block of Royal Oak Avenue, just a few blocks east of Metrotown mall.

When police arrived they found two bodies inside, one of a man and one of a woman. They are waiting to release the woman's identity until after her next of kin are notified.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team called it a "cold and callous killing" and said the case is being investigated as a double homicide. Neither victim was known to police.

"It doesn't appear to be gang related," Pound said. "We are still looking to confirm and really attain what the motive was here."

Tran's friends told CTV News he had moved to Canada from Vietnam and worked as a sushi chef before buying the restaurant.

Former owner Brian Ly said he's shocked by the slaying.

"The guy is a really good guy. He's been working this place ... for the family and for him to end like this, it's pretty sad to hear," he said.
