A B.C. Mountie has been charged with dangerous driving in connection to a head-on crash that killed one young man and left another seriously injured.
Twenty-year-old Steven Genberg died in hospital six days after an RCMP cruiser allegedly crossed the centre line and struck his Ford Mustang on Highway 7 in Agassiz on the night of July 12, 2011. A 19-year-old passenger was also wounded in the collision.
After a lengthy investigation by Abbotsford police, Const. Jordan Braid has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Police say he was responding to a domestic dispute call at the time of the crash, which left him with a broken arm.
Investigators have said the Mountie was driving 99 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone, and did not have his emergency equipment activated at the time of impact. Genberg was driving somewhere between 60 and 74 kilometres per hour.
Genberg, who worked as a truck driver for Mission Auto Body, had recently learned he was going to be a first-time father.
Braid has been re-assigned to desk duty and is also the subject of an internal code of conduct investigation. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on June 26 in Chilliwack.
