A pilot was airlifted to hospital after a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Pitt Meadows Airport Sunday morning.

James Neale, the operations and maintenance manager at Pitt Meadows Airport, says the pilot was the only person onboard when the aircraft hit the ground shortly before 8 a.m.

He says he doesn't know whether the incident was caused by a mechanical issue or another type of problem.

Neale says the plane involved in the crash is a small, single-engine and single-propeller aircraft.

Media outlets report the pilot suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Columbian Hospital.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the accident.
