A 15-year-old Squamish boy is dead after being struck by a taxi while biking on Highway 99 late Saturday night.

Mounties say Dean McCall was hit on the highway near Mamquam Road at around 11:35 p.m. and suffered severe head injuries.

The teenager was taken to Squamish General Hospital before being airlifted to BC Children's Hospital, where he died Sunday afternoon.

The 49-year-old taxi driver stayed at the scene, and investigators do not believe alcohol, speed or distracted driving were factors in the crash.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen said there's a dedicated bike lane on the highway, but it's not clear yet whether the cyclist was using it.

"We're trying to determine a number of factors, such as where exactly the bike and rider were situated at the time of the crash, and whether the bicyclist was attempting to cross the highway."

The RCMP says though McCall's family is grieving, they want to reach out to other young people and encourage safe cycling.

Reflective gear, lights and a helmet are all recommended while biking at night.
