A Richmond city employee has been fired over allegations they stole about $200,000 from a local community centre.

Officials noticed "some financial irregularities" in the accounts of the South Arm Community Association in September, according to city spokesman Ted Townsend.

"We quickly discovered that there was evidence of some misappropriation of funds," he told ctvbc.ca.

"It's certainly a significant loss."

Townsend said the thefts appear to have been spread out over a five-year period and the evidence pointed to a single employee. The worker was temporarily suspended and then fired soon after.

Richmond RCMP have now taken over the case and charges have not been laid. Mounties say their investigation is ongoing, but they are not releasing any further information.

The South Arm Community Association, which operates the South Arm Community Centre in partnership with the city, declined to comment about the allegations.
