The victim of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team's first murder case of the year has been identified by police as 41-year-old Patrick Martin.

Police discovered Martin lying unconscious in a Surrey alley behind the 12800-block of 92 A Avenue just after 8 a.m on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital and put on life support, but was pronounced dead seven hours later.

Although an IHIT media release says the victim, "sustained injuries consistent with a homicide," an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause of death.

Investigators were canvassing the area where the victim was found to find witnesses, but a suspect has yet to be arrested.
