A convenience store employee working Christmas day as a "good deed" is dead after being shot on the job in Surrey, B.C.

Paramedics discovered a grievously injured 27-year-old Alok Gupta at Ken's Grocery in the 11000-block of 96 Avenue around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

"The victim of this homicide was working today, Christmas day, as a good deed to the owners who wished to celebrate Christmas together. It's beyond a tragedy when a good deed turns into the loss of someone's life." Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a release Sunday.

IHIT is canvassing the area around the scene to find information about the events leading up to the murder. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators.

An autopsy will be performed to confirm that Gupta died of a gunshot wound. Area residents say the victim had only arrived in Canada from India six months before he was killed.

Police haven't yet said whether the killing is linked to drugs, gangs or organized crime.

This is the third shooting to hit Surrey this weekend. A 28-year-old man was killed after being shot at a house party on Saturday morning, and a woman was sent to hospital after a shooting in a parking lot early the next day.
