Police seized a huge cache of firearms discovered on an abandoned and private rural property in central B.C. on Thursday.

RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said investigators found more than 45 rifles and two handguns on an isolated, unsecured property located near Maindlay Road on the east side of the Nasko Lake Provincial Park in Alexis Creek, B.C., after carrying out a search warrant.

"Most of the rifles were military type assault rifles and some are believed to have been smuggled into Canada," Moskaluk said in a statement.

Police also discovered several sets of military body armour and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

"The seizure is not believed to be tied to gang activity or militant groups at this time," Moskaluk said.

No one has been arrested and investigation into the weapons cache is ongoing. Police plan on speaking to people who may have ties to the property where the firearms were found.
