The grieving family of an 82-year-old woman killed in a hit-and-run this weekend is giving thanks to a Good Samaritan who helped Mounties track their suspect.

Shirley Bennett was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of 105th Avenue and 152nd Street in Surrey Saturday. When Paige, a witness to the crash, saw the driver speed off, she followed him and gave police directions to where they could find him.

Bennett's grandson Doug Allen says he wants to express his gratitude to Paige.

"She's an amazing woman, and the family would like to personally thank her," he told CTV News.

A 44-year-old Port Coquitlam man was arrested in connection with the collision, but was released without charge.

Allen had a message for him as well: "Just try to imagine someone leaving your grandma there to die on the ground, after you actually get out of the car and look at her laying there. Like, feel shame."

Bennett ran the Books and Stuff store in Port Coquitlam for 20 years, but recently moved to Guildford Mews in Surrey.

Allen says she used the intersection where she was killed every day to head to the mall and visit her husband in a care home. He remembers the popular great-grandmother as a loving person.

"She was a very kind person and she tried to help everybody, even though she didn't have the means to do it," he said.

The family is now planning a service for Bennett.
