People in B.C.'s Lower Mainland are cashing in on the craze for the new iPhone 4S by selling their personal reservations to buy one at local Apple stores.

Consumers who are able to get their hands on one of the limited red-hot store reservations are turning around and putting an ad on Craigslist to sell it.

A quick check Monday turned up dozens of ads on the buy-and-sell site ranging from $20 to $100, from stores in Vancouver to Coquitlam.

The way it works is the buyer meets the seller at the Apple store, where the seller has an existing reservation under their own name.

The buyer goes into the store with the seller and picks out the iPhone 4S model they want. When it comes time to pay, the seller allows the buyer to purchase it on their own, meaning the Apple factory warranty goes under their own name.

Sellers say this trend is growing because it's nearly impossible to get an in-store reservation with Apple, and the phones are sold out in most locations across Canada. The new 4S is being released in select Asian markets next week so demand is at an all-time high.

One Craigslist seller named Peter told CTV News that he's out of work, so he has the time to spend all day on the website waiting to make iPhone reservations. He says he's selling two a day right now.

Peter said many of the major telecommunications carriers are sold out of the popular phone, so their customers are facing a month-long backlog, so this is an easy way to get the product without waiting.
