A third Metro Vancouver library closed its doors Monday due to a bedbug infestation, but the facility has already reopened after being cleared by a bug-sniffing dog.

Bedbugs both alive and dead were found late Monday afternoon in the New Westminster Public Library's fiction collection, prompting officials to close the facility and bring in a pest control company.

City spokesman Blair Fryer said the infected books were sealed and removed, and all areas identified by the dog and handler were treated with 140-degree steam.

"We only found the bedbugs in a few books," Fryer said. "We're hopeful that's all we'll find."

High pressure vacuums and a heat chamber method were also employed to remove the parasites.

The library, which serves about 1,500 customers per day, reopened at noon Wednesday.

Last week, bedbugs were discovered at the Burnaby's Cameron library branch. In late September, they were found in the Metrotown location. Both have since reopened.
