Police have arrested a man in a 30-year-old homicide investigation in northern B.C.

Earl Dean Jones was killed by a gunshot wound along a highway south of Dawson Creek on Sept. 25, 1981 after spending the evening with his wife at a cabaret.

Cpl. Annie Linteau says that Crown counsel approved a charge of first-degree murder against 60-year-old Thomas Anthony McDonald on Thursday.

Linteau says McDonald was arrested in Surrey on Friday -- it's unclear when he will appear in court.

Linteau says the shooting took place after a dispute in the cabaret.

She says McDonald left the country shortly after the 1981 incident but returned to Canada in 2009, allowing the Provincial Unsolved Homicide Unit to gather new evidence and information.
