The ex-boyfriend of the Simon Fraser University student shot to death last week has been charged with assaulting her just days before her murder, CTV News has learned.

Aspiring actress and model Maple Batalia, 19, was gunned down near an entrance to the facility's Surrey campus on Sept. 28 in what police describe as a targeted attack.

Her former boyfriend, Gurjinder "Gary" Dhaliwal, turned himself in on two assault charges on Monday.

Those charges stem from an incident at a Tim Hortons donut shop on King George Highway on Sept. 24 against two teenagers, a man and a woman.

CTV News has confirmed one of the people he's accused of assaulting is Batalia. The identity of the other alleged victim is protected under a publication ban.

On Wednesday, sources say Dhaliwal was arrested by Surrey Mounties and brought in for questioning. RCMP have not confirmed the arrest.

Two vehicles believed to be related to the Dhaliwal family were towed from the area where the arrest took place Wednesday afternoon.

No arrests have been made in Batalia's death, but the teen's family alleges she was having troubles with a former boyfriend.

As many as 50 investigators are assigned to the case.
