The new Terry Fox memorial was unveiled Friday at the refurbished Terry Fox Plaza at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

The four bronze statues, which get progressively larger, were created by artist Douglas Coupland.  The statues depict Fox's distinctive run.

Local students opened the ceremony with a symbolic run to the plaza, just days before children across Canada take part in an annual run at their schools to raise money for cancer research.

Premier Christy Clark and Fox's father, Rolly Fox, attended the ceremony.

Fox lost his right leg to cancer at age 20 and started the Marathon of Hope across the country, running almost 5,400 kilometres before he died.

Betty Fox, the mother of one of Canada's best loved heroes, passed away in June.
