Mounties in Fort St. John, B.C., have asked the New Westminster Police Service to conduct an investigation into the in-custody death of a 46-year-old man.

The Fort St. John man was arrested last Friday evening after police received a complaint.

He was locked in a cell and during one of the routine checks was found unresponsive.

Medical help was called, but the man was later pronounced dead.

Officers from the New Westminster criminal investigation section are in Fort St. John conducting the investigation, which is meant to be independent from the RCMP.

The BC Coroners' Service is also conducting an investigation into the sudden death.
