After 10 days of sleeping in shifts and crying from pain, a group of B.C. women has broken the record for the longest hockey game ever played.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, 40 exhausted players finally put down their sticks and ended a game that began on Aug. 26.

"Everyone's learned a lot about what they can do, physically and emotionally. None of us really knew how difficult it was going to be, and it turns out that it was really difficult," organizer Valerie Skelly told CTV News.

"Everyone dug deep. I was so amazed. Girls would just be crying on the ice, they were in so much pain."

In the end, the game at Burnaby 8 Rinks lasted 243 hours and five minutes, busting past the previous record by 65 minutes, with nearly 2,500 goals scored. While the game was on, the players slept between shifts for four of five hours at a time in donated RVs.

It was the culmination of two years of planning for a group of women committed to raising funds to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, and Skelly says the experience has altered their lives completely.

"These women are changed now. They're going to go on and they're going to do something amazing," she said.

"These girls are a special breed."

The game was especially poignant for spectators Angie and Catrina Parent, a mother-daughter pair whose lives have been completely transformed by cystic fibrosis. Catrina's sister Kaylene died from the disease at the age of 22.

"It changes your world -- your everything. You're in and out of hospitals all the time," Angie said.

"It changed everything when we lost Kaylene."

Catrina travelled all the way from Fort McMurray, Alta. to watch the game, while her mother flew south from Prince George. The two women wore purple jerseys marked with a number 22 to commemorate Kaylene's struggle.

"My daughter wanted to be here. This is an amazing event done by amazing ladies," Angie said.

"She would love it. She would have been up here dressed in a costume."

So far, the organizers have raised $125,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, but they're hoping to eventually bring in $400,000. To learn more or donate to the cause, visit the Longest Game 4 CF website.
