An Edmonton hair salon with a controversial ad campaign featuring a woman with a black eye was the target of vandalism on Thursday.

Fluid Salon was spray painted with bright pink spray paint and one window had paper stuck on it with the message: "This is art that is wrongly named violence. That was violence that was wrongly named art."

The ad had triggered outrage and debate over the use of images of domestic violence, after a New York City blogger called attention to the ad in a recent post.

Police said they are investigating the vandalism.

"We are upping our attention to them and we are going to have a lot of patrols around here," Sgt. Rick Evans told CTV Edmonton.

Featuring a young woman sitting on a floral couch with a black eye, the ad stated: "Look good in all you do."

The woman in the ad has perfectly coiffed hair and is wearing high heels and a stylish dress. Behind her stands a well-dressed man holding what appears to be a diamond necklace.

Salon owner Sarah Cameron told CTV Edmonton that the ads were meant to strike a chord with people.

"We want people to talk about it. It's supposed to gear up some sort of discussion," Cameron said. "Look at her; she's not looking at him. Who's to say she's not getting ready to get up and walk away? It's how everybody perceives it."

The ads reportedly lived on the salon's Facebook page for two years before the New York blogger drew attention to the campaign.

Cameron told CTV Edmonton that proceeds from haircuts will be donated to the Edmonton Women's Shelter if customers bring in the ad.
