A search is underway for a man who fell from a nine metre fish boat off northeastern Vancouver Island.

Capt. Bob Evans at the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says the man plunged into the waters of Knight Inlet, in the Port Hardy area, late Thursday morning.

An intense air and water search began almost immediately and continued through the day but turned up no trace of the fisherman.

The coast guard ship Tanu took over the search effort overnight.

Additional coast guard and RCMP vessels will be in Knight Inlet Friday, and a helicopter will also join the mission.

The man's name has not been released.
