Liquor stores in downtown Vancouver will close early again Wednesday night ahead of the deciding game of the Stanley Cup final.

The office of B.C.'s solicitor general said Tuesday that 13 private and six public liquor stores in the downtown core will shut their doors at 4 p.m. Wednesday night in an effort to curb public rowdiness and drunkenness associated with Vancouver Canucks playoff games.

In a statement, Solicitor General Shirley Bond said that the decision to close stores early on Monday was a smashing success, with police and liquor inspectors reporting a sharp decline in the presence of open liquor on the streets.

"The atmosphere in the Granville entertainment district was more positive with fewer disturbances," Bond said. "This is a similar result to the early liquor store closures during the Olympics."

Officers poured out more than 3,000 liquor bottles on Friday after more than 100,000 revelers attended post-game celebrations in downtown Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver expects its largest crowd of the playoffs to come into downtown Vancouver Wednesday night as the Canucks play a do-or-die game at Rogers Arena against the Boston Bruins.

The province says controlling access to alcohol is a significant part of its safety strategy. Officers are expected to concentrate on enforcement at SkyTrain stations, the Georgia Street fan zone and the Granville entertainment district.

A zero tolerance approach is being taken for open alcohol.

Throughout the playoffs, the VPD has had an increased and highly visible presence, hitting the streets early in the evening as part of a "meet and greet" strategy.

With Canucks fans' heightened expectations, some have worried about a repeat of the post-game rioting that occurred after the team lost to the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1994.

The city of Vancouver will close off Georgia Street between Cambie and Richards streets at noon Wednesday to make way for the tens of thousands of people expected at the outdoor fan zone. Hamilton and Homer streets between Dunsmuir and Robson will also be shut down.
