The search is on for an inmate who has walked away from the minimum security Ferndale Institution, east of Vancouver.
Guards at the Mission-area facility say 40-year-old Andrew Shizgal vanished sometime before yesterday's 7 p.m. roll call.
Shizgal is serving a 10 year sentence for break-and-enter and theft, and has served time in the past for various crimes, including weapons possession and fraud.
An arrest warrant has been issued and he is described as five-foot-nine, 179 pounds with brown eyes, brown hair and a scar on his left arm.
