Mounties say a 13-year-old girl is in stable condition after being shot Friday morning in Surrey, B.C., and that the suspected gunman is dead.

Insp. Paulette Freill confirmed the girl was found suffering a gunshot wound to her back at around 11:30 a.m. near Woodland Park Elementary School.

She was airlifted to hospital and is expected to survive.

Freill said the girl had earlier fled from a nearby home in the 15700-block of 90th Avenue that had become engulfed in flames.

Authorities have not determined how the fire started, but believe the fire and shooting are related.

The Emergency Response Team was called to the scene and located a male believed to be the shooter inside the home.

He was taken to hospital via air ambulance, but succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

The home belongs to Huu Thien Nguyen, according to property records.

Surrey RCMP Major Crime is investigating the incident, and the Surrey Fire Department is working to determine the cause of the fire.
