The bone found in a running shoe on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast over the weekend did not come from a human, but was hidden there by an annoyed dog owner, police have confirmed.

The remains were discovered by a woman walking on a beach in Powell River Saturday afternoon.

After news of the discovery broke on Sunday, a local man called RCMP to explain how the bone got there, RCMP Cpl. Annie Linteau told ctvbc.ca

"They said that they were out walking their dog and the dog kept chewing on a bone. So that the dog would stop chewing on the bone, the gentleman put the bone in a discarded shoe on the beach and left it at that, not thinking much of it," Linteau said.

A coroner has since confirmed that the bone is not human.

Ten human feet have washed up in the coastal region from B.C. to northwestern Washington since August 2007.

The most recent discovery was made on Dec. 5, 2010 in the city of Tacoma, south of Seattle. It was found inside a boy's size 6 OzArk Trail brand hiking boot.

The first foot to appear matched the DNA of a man who was depressed and likely took his own life.

Two feet found separately in New Balance running shoes in Richmond belong to the same woman, but she remains unidentified.

There is no evidence of foul play in any of those cases.
