Mexican hotel officials are denying a gas leak was responsible for the death of Vancouver businesswoman Debbie McKeen, whose body was discovered Monday morning by resort staff in San Miguel de Allende.

Employees at the Hotel Boutique La Puertecita knocked at McKeen's suite after learning she missed a 10 a.m. painting class, according to a report in Spanish-language news site Correo.

A travelling companion told the site someone had lodged a complaint about a possible gas leak prior to McKeen's death, a charge hotel management has denied.

Hotel officials say the cause of death is unclear and that an autopsy is pending.

A Foreign Affairs spokesman told ctvbc.ca in an email that Canadian consular officials are investigating a death in San Miguel de Allende but could not confirm the deceased's identity.

"Consular officials in Mexico City and in Ottawa are providing consular assistance to the family as required. Due to privacy considerations, no further information is available at this time," Allan Caccione said.

McKeen was on the board of directors of the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation. Her bio on the website describes her as an international education consultant and a married mother of five grown sons.
