LONDON - The British government has halted bidding for a $9.7 billion defence contract after a B.C. company was found to have sensitive information.

The contract is for search and rescue helicopters.

Britain's Department for Transport says police are investigating how the information found its way to CHC Helicopter of Vancouver.

The company was part of the Soteria consortium which was the preferred bidder for the contract.

The department says Soteria confessed to the government in December that it received help from a member of the government's project team.

Other members of the consortium are Royal Bank of Scotland, defence and transportation contractor Thales UK and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.
