The cat is out of the bag.
Liberal leadership candidate George Abbott has confessed his campaign was behind a website mocking rival Christy Clark for signing up a cat as a Liberal party member -- but stopped short of admitting he set Clark up.
Abbott's admission came hours after CTV News revealed a set of suspicious paw prints in the source code of the website that linked it to a Toronto-based political strategy firm that works for Abbott.
"I have learned this afternoon that this website was created by a vendor who works for my campaign when they learned through the media that a story regarding Ms. Clark's campaign sign-ups was under development," Abbott said in a statement.
Abbott said he wasn't aware of the decision, and says he asked the site to be taken down.
The site, Kitties4Christy.com, pokes fun at the controversy surrounding the registration of Olympia, a cat belonging to a volunteer for the Clark campaign.
When the Clark campaign learned of the registration, they acted immediately to remove the cat from the rolls.
But that didn't stop the website from mocking Clark with a video of a cat saying, "The humans have caught on to our master plan."
Cute cats seemed to take pride in being part of the political process, while people worried about a catastrophe of voter fraud.
"If this was an attempt at a joke it was a very bad one," Abbott told CTV News on Friday.
So CTV News showed the website to computer scientist Rui Pereira of WavefrontCG.com. He looked at the source code and found the authors of the website had left something behind.
"It's like someone breaks a window but doesn't leave gloves," said Pereira. "He leaves fingerprints. And those fingerprints can be used to track you."
In the source code, the author of the website was identified as Bo Chen, who works for Toronto-based Campaign Research, which has worked for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and now works for George Abbott's campaign.
Neither Chen nor the company returned phone calls.
The website records also show that the company had the site registered on February 1, three days before anyone in the public knew anything about the cat scandal.
"The fact that this was done days before the event was even discovered seemed to imply that they (the campaign) knew about this beforehand," said Pereira.
Abbott denies setting Clark up.
Joel De Guzman admitted to signing up his friend and Clark volunteer Kristy Wawryk's cat up as a joke, but denied knowing anything about Abbott's campaign.
"In all honesty it was a complete joke," he said. "I have no idea who Bo Chen is and as far as John Abbott (sic) goes I don't know how this would affect anything to tell the truth," he said.

they are not taking this seriously enough! this is the leadership people, these people will decide where, how, when and to whom the $$$ (your hard earned and given tax dollars) will be spent upon. these are the same people who will write laws and legislation that will govern our every day lives. our province has become a joke, there is no accountability in the leadership and frankly, we are living in a dictatorship where the will of the leader has superseded the benefit of the people. they think that this is a joke, that this is humour! well, i say that the leadership has to cast itself into a higher role than they are now, these people need to be dead serious about their job! we need to bring back the laws and punishment of voter fraud, treason and white collar criminal activity in politics. dismiss both clark and abbott from the race, they are both a blight on the integrity that is supposed to accompany political office. they must learn that 1 does ruin it for all! |
No worries Christy. I do not think anyone is surprised that Abbott would try and pull off a stunt like this. This is why your going to win this and he will be out!!!!! |
Those of us who live in Abbott's riding have for years now nick named him "Bobble-Head", it is becoming evident that name would be appropriate. |
If I had made this practical joke or related to it in my current job I would have been fired!I was checking my HST related to just today's shopping expenses form my family just to go thru this week and that too only essential things, plus taxes I paid for my gas...it was very hard earned money.I expect some one in this province who can be a leader and use our taxes in a sensible way and seek progress of our nation. Instead they are making fun with cats and websites. This is the same guy who was our education minister!! and we are trying to combat bullying.Bunch of hypocrites.I am upset the way province is heading without a proper head. |
See Abbott is like Scambell! Deny Deny DenyThe same old regime tactics of the Dictator that resigned!!!!!!!!!!!! |

BC Liberals are a bunch of Cats (Meowing) to make fool of the public of BC. What does a liberal BC candidate running for BC Premier say to another "I do a better cat call and Meow - so i should be the premier" |
It looks like a set up, why else would he register a web site called kittens4christy.com a couple days before the whole cat incident went public. How did they find out about the cat in this first place? Both the Liberal and NDP have become a joke in BC, and are an embarrassment to our nation. |
This is indicative of the JOKE that the BC Liberal party has become. Wasn't it embarrassment enough having the current premier of BC who happens to be the current leader of the BC Liberal party have his MUG SHOT on the front page of newspapers around the world? There are SERIOUS issues that need to be dealt with in BC, issues that British Columbian's are concerned about, such as, the way the HST was implemented, the way the BC Rail sale took place, that BC has the lowest minimum wage in Canada, that BC has the highest child poverty in Canada, and on and on and on. Maybe instead of joking around with kitty cartoons, silly kitty websites, fake cat registrations and such, these supposedly serious candidates who want to lead British Columbia might want to roll up their sleeves and get serious about the many serious issues facing British Columbians. 10 years of the BC Liberals is ENOUGH ALREADY. It's time for a CHANGE!!! |
Huh...dirty tricks from a Liberal. Sure it is provincial, sure it is on another Liberal....but, where is the mock outrage fro all the left wing pundits who claim that Liberals of all stripes are squeaky clean and don't do ANYTHING dirty and this is the territory of those nasty Conservatives.....oh the shame of it all.... |
Sure, and we believe you, Why???? This is going to be interesting, I wonder how many dogs and birds are going to sign up on line?????? |
"If this was an attempt at a joke it was a very bad one," Abbott told CTV News on FridayI thought it was funny. lolcats memes are all over the web so this style of joke showcases the abbott campaign is clever and is in touch with the younger generation. he should have used this to his advantage instead of dismissing it as "not funny". |
I don't mind kitties Liberal kitties voting. The average Liberal kitty is smarter and more likable than anyone running for the Neverending Dumb Policies party. In fact , the average kitty cat is brighter than anyone that would vote for the Neanderthal Dopehead Party. You think Larsen has any brain cells left after years of toking up ? |
It just shows how far this corrupt government will go to decieve the public. It is time people to open your eyes and realise how far they will go to lie. They will not get my support. They are all their for themselves and no one else. |
I think one of the cats would do much better, but it's funny how much back tracking the other side is doing with relation to to the originality!! |
I don't have a problem seeing how this joke could be funny,in the right circles. But to skeptical voters living in a rudderless province, how can they be blamed for being cynical? For one thing, this "prank" raises the same old questions about sgn-ups during political races or conventions. There hasn't been a party that hasn't been touched by a sign up scandal. In this case, one could easily ask Christy,"if a cat can be signed up as a joke, how many "people" who should not be signed up,are"? There seems to be a lot of infighting in both provincial parties. And I have no reason to think their differences will disapper just because they have a new "leader".In both paties there are left-right policy differences. That won't change.Christy is a "BIG L,left wing Liberal. No matter who wins the leadership, she will still be just that. The NDP is also struggling, with some people wanting an even more left wing party, and others thinking they need to be more moderate and business friendly. This is where I go back to my pet peeve.Voters want a party that respects "the will of the people". So again I ask,"which people".If there are this many differences of opinions among people of the same party, how does anyone expect any one government to "respect the will of all the citizens of BC"?? There are more than 4 million of un in this province. And with genuinely different needs and "wills".Rural is different than urban.Labour is different than industry.Single is different than married.Young is different than mature.Etc,etc. Please. If someone can thell me what is "the real will" of "all the people",voting will become so much easier. For now, aren't all these elections and contests really about how the majority can get it's own way? |
Well i think it would be appropriate for Abbott to step out of the race for premier effective immediately! |
Campbell used dirty tactics, at two different elections. The election lie, the BCR wasn't for sale. The election lie, the HST wasn't on Campbell and Hansen's radar. Caught in a lie, Hansen finally admitted, the HST papers were on his desk, before the election. So, the Liberals signing up cats, is no surprise. That's the only way, Campbell taught them to, cheat to win, because that's what he did. |
Till BC liberals call on enquiry into BC Rails, HST,and David Basi/Virk saga. My votes goes to NDP. Not because I love NDP, only because they're standing next line and I'm giving them another shot. |
In response to Doug^^^BC....."the real will" of all the people in British Columbia, is hopefully, Fiscal Responsibility while still having a Social Conscience. Neither of these priorities are held important by the BC Liberals sadly. |
The public demands to know what Christy Clarks involvement in BC Rail was. Why isn't the media pressing the issue. |
I think that Abbott needs to truly come clean. He knew all along. Proof that he cannot be trusted and hopefully fingers crossed that he is not the next premier of BC. If we end up with Abbott in the seat he will lie just as much as Gordon Campbell. George Abbott has nothing to offer the people of BC and should just go on a long vacation and get out of the faces of BC people PERIOD. |
