A 37-year-old Vernon, B.C. man who killed another man and then cut up the victim's body has been found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder.

Kenneth Barter, who suffers from schizophrenia, had been facing a second degree murder charge in the death of 32-year-old Nathan Mayrhofer in August of last year.

Crown lawyer Howard Pontious says Barter admitted to killing Mayrhofer with a hammer and then cutting up his body under the delusion that Mayrhofer was a danger to his father.

The Lumby man's dismembered remains were found in the fridge of Barter's apartment.

Pontious says the finding that Barter is not criminally responsible means he will be initially confined to a mental institution.

He says Barter will go before a review board to determine how long he will remain institutionalized.
