The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is hoping to cut down on intersection crashes by installing 140 new red light cameras throughout B.C. beginning Tuesday.

The digital cameras, which take a photo of the licence plate, are aimed at catching and ticketing drivers who run red lights. If caught, drivers are fined $167.

The cameras have a proven track record in reducing crashes, says ICBC spokesperson Adam Grossman.

"They've been incredibly effective," he told ctvbc.ca. "The camera has been absolutely proven in helping to save lives."

The $23-million initiative will place cameras at 140 of the highest risk intersections, including 45 in Vancouver. Previously 120 locations shared 30 cameras on a rotation.

Grossman said the past program resulted in 23,000 tickets on average per year and a 5% reduction in crashes over a five year period.

He projects the additional cameras will result in upwards of 33,000 tickets per year.

A map of all the intersections with red light cameras can be found on ICBC's website.
