TORONTO - General Motors Co. is recalling almost 7,000 cars and trucks in Canada to fix separate problems that could cause an airbag to not work or a rear axle pin to shift and the vehicle to crash.
The automaker's Canadian office said Thursday that it is notifying the government of a defect in about 6,700 Cadillac CTS mid-size cars from model years 2005 to 2007.
An airbag sensor may not detect that a person is sitting in the passenger seat, which could lead to the airbag not activating in a crash.
The Canadian recall is part of a larger U.S. recall of 96,000 cars.
Meanwhile, 200 GM trucks in Canada and 1,300 in the U.S. are being recalled due to a rear axle problem.
The axle's cross pin could fracture, move and lead to a crash. The company added that drivers may hear a banging noise from the axle if the pin has shifted out of position.
Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 and Silverado 1500, as well as GMC Sierra 1500 models from 2011 are included in the recall.
Dealers will replace sensing systems in the cars and rear axle cross pins in the trucks free of charge.
GM said customers will get letters in the mail in the new year with instructions on how to get the problems fixed.
