A large sinkhole has swallowed a large patch of road along a major route in Vancouver, but no drivers were caught in the mess.

Wendy Stewart with the City of Vancouver says a sinkhole nearly 10 metres wide opened up Sunday afternoon along Southwest Marine Drive, a busy commuter artery along the southern edge of the city near Richmond.

It's not clear what caused the sinkhole -- Stewart says a water main was found damaged underneath, but crews didn't know whether the broken water main caused the sinkhole, or vice versa

Stewart says there are large chunks of asphalt inside the hole, and a gas line was also damaged.

She says it's a "miracle" that no cars fell in, given how busy the road usually is.

The road will remain closed for the Monday morning commute, and Stewart says it could be a day or two before it's fixed.
