The man wanted in connection with the 2009 murder of a pair of Kamloops, B.C., roommates turned himself into Burnaby Mounties early Tuesday morning -- a day after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Friday, police charged 53-year-old Roy Frederick Fraser in connection with the murders of 31-year-old Damien Marks and 24-year-old Kenneth Yaretz.
The bodies of both men were discovered on a 20-acre parcel of land in the resort town of Knouff Lake, near the popular Sun Peaks resort, in May 2009.
The roommates disappeared the month earlier in the middle of moving to a four-plex house in Brocklehurst. Yaretz was believed to have ties to the Independent Soldiers criminal gang.
Police say Fraser was living on the rural property where the bodies of the two young men were found.
Staff Sgt. Garry Kerr said there are several theories as to what the motive for the killings was.
"I can tell you pot grow operations played a role in it," he said.
Fraser has a drug-related criminal history, and police say so did Yaretz. They speculate the two may have had an argument. Investigators believe Marks was an innocent victim.
Marks' father, Robert, agrees.
"He was never involved in anything for him to come to an end like that except for the fact that his associate seemed to be a troubled person," he said.
Police say DNA and forensics played a key role in laying the charges.
"We utilized a forensic botanist and we also utilized a forensic expert in the tying of knots. And the information we garnered from that was very, very crucial to the investigation," Kerr said.
Forensic knot specialists can determine if the murderer was right of left handed, whether there was more than one person involved and whether the killer was in a hurry.
Fraser will be transferred back to Kamloops for court proceedings.
