A suspect in a fatal hit and run in Surrey, B.C., has surrendered to authorities the day after the victim's mother made an emotional plea for closure.

Mounties say the 32-year-old Surrey resident turned himself in late Thursday afternoon accompanied by his lawyer. Police have withheld his name because no charges have yet been laid.

His surrender came nearly two weeks after a teenage boy was killed on the Fraser Highway.

Shamus MacKay, 19, was hit by a car after stepping off a bus near 168th Street in the early morning hours of Sept. 4. His mother Anne came forward on Wednesday to ask the public's help in tracking down the driver, who fled the scene.

The suspect was released from custody on Thursday night. Mounties are continuing to investigate and have seized a suspect vehicle.

Charges will be recommended once the investigation is complete, police say.
